a live concert movie meditation on democracy

Director of Photography & Visual Design Nathan James Leatherman

Who’s performing?
The Jen Chapin Trio - - with Jen Chapin accompanied by GRAMMY© nominated bassist Stephan Crump and “impeccable melodist” (New York Times) Jamie Fox on electric guitar - - performs “observant, lyrically deft, politically aware and emotionally intuitive” (Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel) and “brilliant soulfully poetic urban folk music” (NPR), “delivered in a style that ranges from tender fragility to unexpected steeliness” (The New Yorker).
What is the film?
A concert movie made with live recordings of Jen Chapin’s new show Anything Goes…and How Did We Get Here, featuring the music of Jen Chapin with additional songs by Cole Porter, Harry Chapin, Gene DuPaul and Sammy Cahn. Its purpose is to inspire hope and direction for citizen action during this most consequential summer.

Since we know some folks are already making BBQ plans, we're structuring the Jalopy Theater shoot so there is more than one opportunity to participate. There will be some (ok, a good amount) of interactivity in Brooklyn, but all safe and very, very fun. Could involve some dancing. We might ask you to hold up a hand painted sign. Think of it as political dinner theater and you’ve got the vibe exactly.
When does the movie come out?
It will be released on July 4th 2026, the 250th Anniversary of Congressional Approval of the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America. (Cue fireworks and renewed interest in civil discourse).
Will my name really be on it?
Yes! If you show up for filming, we’ll include your name in Nathan’s artful opening and end credits. We hope you will!
How are you going to pull this off?
With help from you. We need your ideas, your engagement, and your financial contributions to bring this movie to life.
